Maintaining Good Health

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Imagine it’s 12 months from now. You’ve just had your Spatz adjustable gastric balloon removed after losing 25 kilos. Now you want to maintain your improved health. Here are some tips to help you do so. In many cases, continuing the good habits you’ve developed over the past year will continue to serve you well. If you’d like to add to them, start slow and pick up one new healthy habit at a time. The trick is to always be working on a new behavioral goal while having a few more in the works, ready to implement as soon as you master the current goal.

Plan, shop and cook ahead of time. Eating well often means more work preparing meals, so do as much as you can during your downtime, such as weekends. If you have a nice salad already prepared, a batch of vegetarian chili or quinoa already cooked and ready for a few fresh veggies to be added, you’re  ahead of the game. You can bake a chicken on Sunday and eat it for a few days after.

Don’t skip meals. You need to eat regularly to maintain blood sugar levels. Also, when you’re famished, you’ll tend to make poorer food choices. So eat at least 3 times a day and try to space your meals out so you’re eating every 4-5 hours or so. Some people do better with 5-6 smaller meals. Experiment to see how your body reacts.

Keep moving. Add some new form of movement into your life. If you’re tired of your exercise routine, try Qi Gong or kettle bells or Google “exercise videos” for dozens of new ideas.

Buy fun kitchen gadgets like the relatively new spiralizer that turns fruits and vegetables into fun shapes.

It’s becoming increasingly popular to turn spiral-ized veggies into “pasta” dishes by combining them with a tomato or marinara sauce. Firm fruits and vegetables like carrots, zucchini and sweet potatoes work best. One large zucchini makes enough for a single serving, topped with sauce, you have an easy, healthy meal. Other spiralizer blades make “rice” and sweet potatoes are ideal for that dish. I’ve written before about how useful juicers, blenders and immersion blenders are in maintaining healthy diet. The spiralizer is a brand new way to look at fruits and veggies.

A final tip. Stay connected to other health and wellness-oriented people, websites, blogs, magazines, Pinterest boards and books. There are an overwhelming number of resources out there. Just jump in anywhere to keep yourself wellness-oriented.
