If You Hate To Exercise

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are some people who just love to exercise. Gym rats. Marathon runners. Team sports players. Yoga enthusiasts. People like that.

And then there’s the rest of us. We constantly hear how important exercise is. We might even exercise on a regular basis. But we can’t say we’re thrilled to be touching our toes for the 10,000th time or swimming one more lap in the community pool.

Some of us cringe at any mention of the word exercise and hope the topic changes quickly. Perhaps we have traumatic memories of high school gym class. Or we’re  currently unable to move our bodies in anything resembling exercise without discomfort or actual pain.

What do you do if you’re not drawn to exercise but want to strengthen your body in combination with health eating choices and a gastric balloon? According to Emily Rosen, Director of The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, you should “move in ways you love”. Avoid exercise that makes you feel badly about yourself. Exercise that you have to force yourself to do is actually counterproductive. Guilt over exercise can cause your body to react by increasing its output of cortisol and insulin. These hormones can be  counterproductive in your quest to lose weight.

Look for ways to move your body that you can do, that make you feel good about the body you currently have, that give you some form of pleasure. Let go of the “No pain, no gain” mentality when it comes to exercise. If exercise is really hard for you, whether physically, psychologically or both, start with tiny steps. Do anything you can. Don’t set lofty goals that just make you feel more guilty.

So if you hate to exercise, don’t exercise. Just find a way to move that brings you pleasure, helps you feel good about the  body that you’re in and helps you feel more alive.
